Our Begining

DeckTech, Inc. founder Ron J. McKenna got his start as a home inspector specializing in waterproofing inspections. In the mid 80′s and 90′s he realized a fundamental shift occurring in California’s housing architecture. From the 70′s on, homes were beginning to change from wood siding to stucco. They also began to incorporate balcony decks and stair assemblies over living spaces. Tile deck surfaces and cement deck surfaces became more and more popular.

A New Industry

This change had born a new industry. Waterproof deck coatings were now needed on walking deck surfaces. Prior to this the typical application was a conventional roof with ample slope. Now elevated balcony decks with minimal slope and ample pedestrian traffic were common. During his waterproofing inspections Ron began to notice a disturbing trend. Deck leaks and severe dry-rot or termite damage to underlying areas of roof decks had become commonplace. The root of the problem was an array of materials and details installed on these decks with no common standards.

The Need for a Waterproofing Specialist

When Ron was asked by clients to refer a Waterproofing Specialist to rectify these leaky deck coatings, he had found the industry only had a select few deck coating installers. Most that did exist had terrible service and warranty claims. Others had deck assemblies with poor details and products that often only lasted a short time and looked awful upon completion. Ron also noticed these applicators were very limited in the services they provided to clients. Most could install a waterproof deck coating, but couldn’t apply new framing details, or complete needed deck flashing and drain assemblies. This left most clients with projects that required several outside trade sources to properly complete projects. This was a recipe for disaster when failure occurred and the finger pointing began.

Ron took note of this need and decided somebody had to do something about it. Since he was a third generation contractor with notable experience in the construction trade, and had seen the problem first hand it might as well be him. Slowly he began the journey to offer his clients a solution for these deck coating repair areas. Over time his company DeckTech, Inc. would become a full service “one stop shop”. Ron’s clients could depend on him and his crew to provide a sound long term solution to their existing leaky deck or leaky stair project. From start to finish Ron and his team would complete projects without any outside contractors so they could ensure every step and detail would be done properly.
